But,mindyou,thoughPeterwassoslowingoingbacktohismother,hewasquitedecidedtogoback.Thebestproofofthiswashiscautionwiththefairies.TheyweremostanxiousthatheshouldremainintheGardenstoplaytothem,andtobringthistopasstheytriedtotrickhimintomakingsucharemarkas’Iwishthegrasswasnotsowet,’andsomeofthemdancedoutoftimeinthehopethathemightcry,’Idowishyouwouldkeeptime!’Thentheywouldhavesaidthatthiswashissecondwish.Buthesmokedtheirdesign,andthoughonoccasionshebegan,’Iwish——’healwaysstoppedintime.Sowhenatlasthesaidtothembravely,’Iwishnowtogobacktomotherforeverandalways,’theyhadtoticklehisshouldersandlethimgo.
Hewentinahurryintheend,becausehehaddreamtthathismotherwascrying,andheknewwhatwasthegreatthingshecriedfor,andthatahugfromhersplendidPeterwouldquicklymakehertosmile.Oh!hefeltsureofit,andsoeagerwashetobenestlinginherarmsthatthistimeheflewstraighttothewindow,whichwasalwaystobeopenforhim.
Butthewindowwasclosed,andtherewereironbarsonit,andpeeringinsidehesawhismothersleepingpeacefullywithherarmaroundanotherlittleboy.
