           ItwassomewhatafterthistimeonHallowe’enthatagreatblazewasseenatmidnightonthetopofSentinelHillwheretheoldtable-likestonestandsamidstitstumulusofancientbones. ConsiderabletalkwasstartedwhenSilasBishopoftheundecayedBishopsmentionedhavingseentheboyrunningsturdilyupthathillaheadofhismotheraboutanhourbeforetheblazewasremarked. Silaswasroundingupastrayheifer,buthenearlyforgothismissionwhenhefleetinglyspiedthetwofiguresinthedimlightofhislantern. Theydartedalmostnoiselesslythroughtheunderbrush,andtheastonishedwatcherseemedtothinktheywereentirelyunclothed. Afterwardshecouldnotbesureabouttheboy,whomayhavehadsomekindofafringedbeltandapairofdarktrunksortrouserson. Wilburwasneversubsequentlyseenaliveandconsciouswithoutcompleteandtightlybuttonedattire,thedisarrangementorthreateneddisarrangementofwhichalwaysseemedtofillhimwithangerandalarm. Hiscontrastwithhissqualidmotherandgrandfatherinthisrespectwasthoughtverynotableuntilthehorrorof1928suggestedthemostvalidofreasons. 

           ThenextJanuarygossipsweremildlyinterestedinthefactthat‘Lavinny’sblackbrat’hadcommencedtotalk,andattheageofonlyelevenmonths. Hisspeechwassomewhatremarkablebothbecauseofitsdifferencefromtheordinaryaccentsoftheregion,andbecauseitdisplayedafreedomfrominfantilelispingofwhichmanychildrenofthreeorfourmightwellbeproud. Theboywasnottalkative,yetwhenhespokeheseemedtoreflectsomeelusiveelementwhollyunpossessedbyDunwichanditsdenizens. Thestrangenessdidnotresideinwhathesaid,oreveninthesimpleidiomsheused; butseemedvaguelylinkedwithhisintonationorwiththeinternalorgansthatproducedthespokensounds.
