           Arumblingsoundseemedbrewingbeneaththehills,mixedstrangelywithaconcordantrumblingwhichclearlycamefromthesky. Lightningflashedaloft,andthewonderingcrowdlookedinvainfortheportentsofstorm. ThechantingofthemenfromArkhamnowbecameunmistakable,andWheelersawthroughtheglassthattheywereallraisingtheirarmsintherhythmicincantation. Fromsomefarmhousefarawaycamethefranticbarkingofdogs. 

           Thechangeinthequalityofthedaylightincreased,andthecrowdgazedaboutthehorizoninwonder. Apurplishdarkness,bornofnothingmorethanaspectraldeepeningofthesky’sblue,presseddownupontherumblinghills. Thenthelightningflashedagain,somewhatbrighterthanbefore,andthecrowdfanciedthatithadshowedacertainmistinessaroundthealtar-stoneonthedistantheight. Noone,however,hadbeenusingthetelescopeatthatinstant. Thewhippoorwillscontinuedtheirirregularpulsation,andthemenofDunwichbracedthemselvestenselyagainstsomeimponderablemenacewithwhichtheatmosphereseemedsurcharged.
