Hehopedthatitmightbeconqueredwithoutanyrevelationtotheworldofthemonstrousthingithadescaped.Astheshadowsgathered,thenativescommencedtodispersehomeward,anxioustobarthemselvesindoorsdespitethepresentevidencethatallhumanlocksandboltswereuselessbeforeaforcethatcouldbendtreesandcrushhouseswhenitchose. Theyshooktheirheadsatthevisitors’plantostandguardattheFryeruinsneartheglen; and,astheyleft,hadlittleexpectancyofeverseeingthewatchersagain.
Therewererumblingsunderthehillsthatnight,andthewhippoorwillspipedthreateningly. Onceinawhileawind,sweepingupoutofColdSpringGlen,wouldbringatouchofineffablefoetortotheheavynightair; suchafoetorasallthreeofthewatchershadsmelledoncebefore,whentheystoodaboveadyingthingthathadpassedforfifteenyearsandahalfasahumanbeing.
