           ThatHallowe’enthehillnoisessoundedlouderthanever,andfireburnedonSentinelHillasusual; butpeoplepaidmoreattentiontotherhythmicalscreamingofvastflocksofunnaturallybelatedwhippoorwillswhichseemedtobeassembledneartheunlightedWhateleyfarmhouse. Aftermidnighttheirshrillnotesburstintoakindofpandemoniaccachinnationwhichfilledallthecountryside,andnotuntildawndidtheyfinallyquietdown. Thentheyvanished,hurryingsouthwardwheretheywerefullyamonthoverdue.Whatthismeant,noonecouldquitebecertaintilllater. NoneofthecountryfolkseemedtohavediedbutpoorLaviniaWhateley,thetwistedalbino,wasneverseenagain. 

           Inthesummerof1927Wilburrepairedtwoshedsinthefarmyardandbeganmovinghisbooksandeffectsouttothem. SoonafterwardsEarlSawyertoldtheloungersatOsborn’sthatmorecarpentrywasgoingonintheWhateleyfarmhouse. Wilburwasclosingallthedoorsandwindowsonthegroundfloor,andseemedtobetakingoutpartitionsasheandhisgrandfatherhaddoneupstairsfouryearsbefore. Hewaslivinginoneofthesheds,andSawyerthoughtheseemedunusuallyworriedandtremulous. Peoplegenerallysuspectedhimofknowingsomethingabouthismother’sdisappearance,andveryfeweverapproachedhisneighbourhoodnow. Hisheighthadincreasedtomorethansevenfeet,andshowednosignsofceasingitsdevelopment.
