Infact,thereturnofRichardhadquenchedeveryhopethathehadentertainedofrestoringaSaxondynastyinEngland;for,whateverheadtheSaxonsmighthavemadeintheeventofacivilwar,itwasplainthatnothingcouldbedoneundertheundisputeddominionofRichard,popularashewasbyhispersonalgoodqualitiesandmilitaryfame,althoughhisadministrationwaswilfullycareless,nowtooindulgent,andnowalliedtodespotism.
