           Duringthiscombatandthebriefconversationwhichensued,Cedric,attheheadofabodyofmen,amongwhomtheFriarwasconspicuous,hadpushedacrossthebridgeassoonastheysawtheposternopen,anddrovebackthedispiritedanddespairingfollowersofDeBracy,ofwhomsomeaskedquarter,someofferedvainresistance,andthegreaterpartfledtowardsthecourt-yard.DeBracyhimselfarosefromtheground,andcastasorrowfulglanceafterhisconqueror."Hetrustsmenot!"herepeated;"buthaveIdeservedhistrust?"Hethenliftedhisswordfromthefloor,tookoffhishelmetintokenofsubmission,and,goingtothebarbican,gaveuphisswordtoLocksley,whomhemetbytheway.
