           "Tothewalls!"answeredtheTemplar;andtheybothascendedthebattlementstodoallthatskillcoulddictate,andmanhoodaccomplish,indefenceoftheplace.Theyreadilyagreedthatthepointofgreatestdangerwasthatoppositetotheoutworkofwhichtheassailantshadpossessedthemselves.Thecastle,indeed,wasdividedfromthatbarbicanbythemoat,anditwasimpossiblethatthebesiegerscouldassailthepostern-door,withwhichtheoutworkcorresponded,withoutsurmountingthatobstacle;butitwastheopinionbothoftheTemplarandDeBracy,thatthebesiegers,ifgovernedbythesamepolicytheirleaderhadalreadydisplayed,wouldendeavour,byaformidableassault,todrawthechiefpartofthedefenders’observationtothispoint,andtakemeasurestoavailthemselvesofeverynegligencewhichmighttakeplaceinthedefenceelsewhere.Toguardagainstsuchanevil,theirnumbersonlypermittedtheknightstoplacesentinelsfromspacetospacealongthewallsincommunicationwitheachother,whomightgivethealarmwheneverdangerwasthreatened.
