InthisdeplorableconditiontheJew,withhisdaughterandherwoundedpatient,werefoundbyCedric,ashasalreadybeennoticed,andsoonafterwardsfellintothepowerofDeBracyandhisconfederates.Littlenoticewasatfirsttakenofthehorse-litter,anditmighthaveremainedbehindbutforthecuriosityofDeBracy,wholookedintoitundertheimpressionthatitmightcontaintheobjectofhisenterprise,forRowenahadnotunveiledherself.ButDeBracy’sastonishmentwasconsiderable,whenhediscoveredthatthelittercontainedawoundedman,who,conceivinghimselftohavefallenintothepowerofSaxonoutlaws,withwhomhisnamemightbeaprotectionforhimselfandhisfriends,franklyavowedhimselftobeWilfredofIvanhoe.
Theideasofchivalroushonour,which,amidsthiswildnessandlevity,neverutterlyabandonedDeBracy,prohibitedhimfromdoingtheknightanyinjuryinhisdefencelesscondition,andequallyinterdictedhisbetrayinghimtoFront-de-Boeuf,whowouldhavehadnoscruplestoputtodeath,underanycircumstances,therivalclaimantofthefiefofIvanhoe.
