           Besidesthesebands,alessorderlyandaworsearmedforce,consistingoftheSaxoninhabitantsoftheneighbouringtownship,aswellasmanybondsmenandservantsfromCedric’sextensiveestate,hadalreadyarrived,forthepurposeofassistinginhisrescue.Fewofthesewerearmedotherwisethanwithsuchrusticweaponsasnecessitysometimesconvertstomilitarypurposes.Boar-spears,scythes,flails,andthelike,weretheirchiefarms;fortheNormans,withtheusualpolicyofconquerors,werejealousofpermittingtothevanquishedSaxonsthepossessionortheuseofswordsandspears.ThesecircumstancesrenderedtheassistanceoftheSaxonsfarfrombeingsoformidabletothebesieged,asthestrengthofthementhemselves,theirsuperiornumbers,andtheanimationinspiredbyajustcause,mightotherwisewellhavemadethem.ItwastotheleadersofthismotleyarmythattheletteroftheTemplarwasnowdelivered.
