ThewholeappearanceofthedungeonmighthaveappalledastouterheartthanthatofIsaac,who,nevertheless,wasmorecomposedundertheimminentpressureofdanger,thanhehadseemedtobewhileaffectedbyterrors,ofwhichthecausewasasyetremoteandcontingent.Theloversofthechasesaythattheharefeelsmoreagonyduringthepursuitofthegreyhounds,thanwhensheisstrugglingintheirfangs.
Andthusitisprobable,thattheJews,bytheveryfrequencyoftheirfearonalloccasions,hadtheirmindsinsomedegreepreparedforeveryeffortoftyrannywhichcouldbepractiseduponthem;sothatnoaggression,whenithadtakenplace,couldbringwithitthatsurprisewhichisthemostdisablingqualityofterror.NeitherwasitthefirsttimethatIsaachadbeenplacedincircumstancessodangerous.Hehadthereforeexperiencetoguidehim,aswellashope,thathemightagain,asformerly,bedeliveredasapreyfromthefowler.Aboveall,hehaduponhissidetheunyieldingobstinacyofhisnation,andthatunbendingresolution,withwhichIsraeliteshavebeenfrequentlyknowntosubmittotheuttermostevilswhichpowerandviolencecaninflictuponthem,ratherthangratifytheiroppressorsbygrantingtheirdemands.
