Thepathuponwhichthepartytravelledwasnowsonarrow,asnottoadmit,withanysortofconvenience,abovetworidersabreast,andbegantodescendintoadingle,traversedbyabrookwhosebankswerebroken,swampy,andovergrownwithdwarfwillows.CedricandAthelstane,whowereattheheadoftheirretinue,sawtheriskofbeingattackedatthispass;butneitherofthemhavinghadmuchpracticeinwar,nobettermodeofpreventingthedangeroccurredtothemthanthattheyshouldhastenthroughthedefileasfastaspossible.Advancing,therefore,withoutmuchorder,theyhadjustcrossedthebrookwithapartoftheirfollowers,whentheywereassailedinfront,flank,andrearatonce,withanimpetuositytowhich,intheirconfusedandill-preparedcondition,itwasimpossibletooffereffectualresistance.
