Afterhavinginvainendeavouredtoselectthemostbeatenpath,inhopesitmightleadtothecottageofsomeherdsman,orthesilvanlodgeofaforester,andhavingrepeatedlyfoundhimselftotallyunabletodetermineonachoice,theknightresolvedtotrusttothesagacityofhishorse;experiencehaving,onformeroccasions,madehimacquaintedwiththewonderfultalentpossessedbytheseanimalsforextricatingthemselvesandtheirridersonsuchemergencies.
Thegoodsteed,grievouslyfatiguedwithsolongaday’sjourneyunderaridercasedinmail,hadnosoonerfound,bytheslackenedreins,thathewasabandonedtohisownguidance,thanheseemedtoassumenewstrengthandspirit;andwhereas,formerlyhehadscarcerepliedtothespur,otherwisethanbyagroan,henow,asifproudoftheconfidencereposedinhim,prickeduphisears,andassumed,ofhisownaccord,amorelivelymotion.Thepathwhichtheanimaladoptedratherturnedofffromthecoursepursuedbytheknightduringtheday;butasthehorseseemedconfidentinhischoice,theriderabandonedhimselftohisdiscretion.
Hewasjustifiedbytheevent;forthefootpathsoonafterappearedalittlewiderandmoreworn,andthetinkleofasmallbellgavetheknighttounderstandthathewasinthevicinityofsomechapelorhermitage.
Accordingly,hesoonreachedanopenplatofturf,ontheoppositesideofwhich,arock,risingabruptlyfromagentlyslopingplain,offereditsgreyandweatherbeatenfronttothetraveller.
