Therevenuesofthemonastery,ofwhichalargepartwasathisdisposal,whiletheygavehimthemeansofsupplyinghisownveryconsiderableexpenses,affordedalsothoselargesseswhichhebestowedamongthepeasantry,andwithwhichhefrequentlyrelievedthedistressesoftheoppressed.IfPriorAymerrodehardinthechase,orremainedlongatthebanquet,—ifPriorAymerwasseen,attheearlypeepofdawn,toentertheposternoftheabbey,asheglidedhomefromsomerendezvouswhichhadoccupiedthehoursofdarkness,menonlyshruggeduptheirshoulders,andreconciledthemselvestohisirregularities,byrecollectingthatthesamewerepractisedbymanyofhisbrethrenwhohadnoredeemingqualitieswhatsoevertoatoneforthem.PriorAymer,therefore,andhischaracter,werewellknowntoourSaxonserfs,whomadetheirrudeobeisance,andreceivedhis"benedicite,mesfilz,"inreturn.
Butthesingularappearanceofhiscompanionandhisattendants,arrestedtheirattentionandexcitedtheirwonder,andtheycouldscarcelyattendtothePriorofJorvaulx’question,whenhedemandediftheyknewofanyplaceofharbourageinthevicinity;somuchweretheysurprisedatthehalfmonastic,halfmilitaryappearanceoftheswarthystranger,andattheuncouthdressandarmsofhisEasternattendants.Itisprobable,too,thatthelanguageinwhichthebenedictionwasconferred,andtheinformationasked,soundedungracious,thoughnotprobablyunintelligible,intheearsoftheSaxonpeasants.
