Tothesurpriseofallpresent,however,theknightthuspreferredwasnowheretobefound.Hehadleftthelistsimmediatelywhentheconflictceased,andhadbeenobservedbysomespectatorstomovedownoneoftheforestgladeswiththesameslowpaceandlistlessandindifferentmannerwhichhadprocuredhimtheepithetoftheBlackSluggard.Afterhehadbeensummonedtwicebysoundoftrumpet,andproclamationoftheheralds,itbecamenecessarytonameanothertoreceivethehonourswhichhadbeenassignedtohim.PrinceJohnhadnownofurtherexcuseforresistingtheclaimoftheDisinheritedKnight,whom,therefore,henamedthechampionoftheday.
