Sosaying,thetwochampionsclosedtogether,andforafewminutestheydisplayedgreatequalityinstrength,courage,andskill,interceptingandreturningtheblowsoftheiradversarywiththemostrapiddexterity,while,fromthecontinuedclatteroftheirweapons,apersonatadistancemighthavesupposedthattherewereatleastsixpersonsengagedoneachside.Lessobstinate,andevenlessdangerouscombats,havebeendescribedingoodheroicverse;butthatofGurthandtheMillermustremainunsung,forwantofasacredpoettodojusticetoitseventfulprogress.Yet,thoughquarter-staffplaybeoutofdate,whatwecaninprosewewilldofortheseboldchampions.
Longtheyfoughtequally,untiltheMillerbegantolosetemperatfindinghimselfsostoutlyopposed,andathearingthelaughterofhiscompanions,who,asusualinsuchcases,enjoyedhisvexation.Thiswasnotastateofmindfavourabletothenoblegameofquarter-staff,inwhich,asinordinarycudgel-playing,theutmostcoolnessisrequisite;anditgaveGurth,whosetemperwassteady,thoughsurly,theopportunityofacquiringadecidedadvantage,inavailinghimselfofwhichhedisplayedgreatmastery.
TheMillerpressedfuriouslyforward,dealingblowswitheitherendofhisweaponalternately,andstrivingtocometohalf-staffdistance,whileGurthdefendedhimselfagainsttheattack,keepinghishandsaboutayardasunder,andcoveringhimselfbyshiftinghisweaponwithgreatcelerity,soastoprotecthisheadandbody.
