           Gurthwashurriedalongagreeablytothismandate,andhavingbeendraggedsomewhatroughlyoverthebank,ontheleft-handsideofthelane,foundhimselfinastragglingthicket,whichlaybetwixtitandtheopencommon.Hewascompelledtofollowhisroughconductorsintotheverydepthofthiscover,wheretheystoptunexpectedlyinanirregularopenspace,freeinagreatmeasurefromtrees,andonwhich,therefore,thebeamsofthemoonfellwithoutmuchinterruptionfromboughsandleaves.Herehiscaptorswerejoinedbytwootherpersons,apparentlybelongingtothegang.Theyhadshortswordsbytheirsides,andquarter-stavesintheirhands,andGurthcouldnowobservethatallsixworevisors,whichrenderedtheiroccupationamatterofnoquestion,evenhadtheirformerproceedingsleftitindoubt.

           "Whatmoneyhastthou,churl?"saidoneofthethieves.

           "Thirtyzecchinsofmyownproperty,"answeredGurth,doggedly.
