Theappearanceofvanity,whichmightotherwisehavebeenattributedtothisdisplay,wasremovedbytheproprietyshowninexhibitingtothebestadvantagetheprincelyrewardwithwhichhehadbeenjusthonoured,andtheKnightwasagaingreetedbytheacclamationsofallpresent.
Inthemeanwhile,thebustlingPriorofJorvaulxhadremindedPrinceJohn,inawhisper,thatthevictormustnowdisplayhisgoodjudgment,insteadofhisvalour,byselectingfromamongthebeautieswhogracedthegalleriesalady,whoshouldfillthethroneoftheQueenofBeautyandofLove,anddelivertheprizeofthetourneyupontheensuingday.ThePrinceaccordinglymadeasignwithhistruncheon,astheKnightpassedhiminhissecondcareeraroundthelists.TheKnightturnedtowardsthethrone,and,sinkinghislance,untilthepointwaswithinafootoftheground,remainedmotionless,asifexpectingJohn’scommands;whilealladmiredthesuddendexteritywithwhichheinstantlyreducedhisfierysteedfromastateofviolentemotionandhighexcitationtothestillnessofanequestrianstatue.
