           Asecondandathirdpartyofknightstookthefield;andalthoughtheyhadvarioussuccess,yet,uponthewhole,theadvantagedecidedlyremainedwiththechallengers,notoneofwhomlosthisseatorswervedfromhischargemisfortuneswhichbefelloneortwooftheirantagonistsineachencounter.Thespirits,therefore,ofthoseopposedtothem,seemedtobeconsiderablydampedbytheircontinuedsuccess.Threeknightsonlyappearedonthefourthentry,who,avoidingtheshieldsofBois-GuilbertandFront-de-Boeuf,contentedthemselveswithtouchingthoseofthethreeotherknights,whohadnotaltogethermanifestedthesamestrengthanddexterity.Thispoliticselectiondidnotalterthefortuneofthefield,thechallengerswerestillsuccessful:oneoftheirantagonistswasoverthrown,andboththeothersfailedinthe"attaint",thatis,instrikingthehelmetandshieldoftheirantagonistfirmlyandstrongly,withthelanceheldinadirectline,sothattheweaponmightbreakunlessthechampionwasoverthrown.

           Afterthisfourthencounter,therewasaconsiderablepause;nordiditappearthatanyonewasverydesirousofrenewingthecontest.Thespectatorsmurmuredamongthemselves;for,amongthechallengers,MalvoisinandFront-de-Boeufwereunpopularfromtheircharacters,andtheothers,exceptGrantmesnil,weredislikedasstrangersandforeigners.

           ButnonesharedthegeneralfeelingofdissatisfactionsokeenlyasCedrictheSaxon,whosaw,ineachadvantagegainedbytheNormanchallengers,arepeatedtriumphoverthehonourofEngland.
