Sixshillingsaweekdoesnotkeepbodyandsoultogetherveryunitedly. Theywanttogetawayfromeachotherwhenthereisonlysuchaveryslightbondasthatbetweenthem; andoneday,Isuppose,thepainandthedullmonotonyofitallhadstoodbeforehereyesplainerthanusual,andthemockingspectrehadfrightenedher. Shehadmadeonelastappealtofriends,but,againstthechillwalloftheirrespectability,thevoiceoftheerringoutcastfellunheeded; andthenshehadgonetoseeherchild—hadhelditinherarmsandkissedit,inaweary,dullsortofway,andwithoutbetrayinganyparticularemotionofanykind,andhadleftit,afterputtingintoitshandapennyboxofchocolateshehadboughtit,andafterwards,withherlastfewshillings,hadtakenaticketandcomedowntoGoring.
ItseemedthatthebitterestthoughtsofherlifemusthavecentredaboutthewoodedreachesandthebrightgreenmeadowsaroundGoring;butwomenstrangelyhugtheknifethatstabsthem, and,perhaps,amidstthegall,theremayhavemingledalsosunnymemoriesofsweetesthours,spentuponthoseshadoweddeepsoverwhichthegreattreesbendtheirbranchesdownsolow.
Shehadwanderedaboutthewoodsbytheriver’sbrinkallday,andthen,wheneveningfellandthegreytwilightspreaditsduskyrobeuponthewaters,shestretchedherarmsouttothesilentriverthathadknownhersorrowandherjoy.
