           TheswanshadtriedtodraghimandMontmorencyoutoftheboatanddrownthem;andhehaddefendedhimselflikeaheroforfourhours,andhadkilledthelot,andtheyhadallpaddledawaytodie. 

           "Howmanyswansdidyousaytherewere?"askedGeorge. 

           "Thirty-two,"repliedHarris,sleepily. 

           "Yousaideighteenjustnow,"saidGeorge. 

           "No,Ididn’t,"gruntedHarris;"Isaidtwelve.ThinkIcan’tcount?" 

           Whatweretherealfactsabouttheseswansweneverfoundout. WequestionedHarrisonthesubjectinthemorning,andhesaid,"Whatswans?"andseemedtothinkthatGeorgeandIhadbeendreaming. 

           Oh,howdelightfulitwastobesafeintheboat,afterourtrialsandfears! Weateaheartysupper,GeorgeandI,andweshouldhavehadsometoddyafterit,ifwecouldhavefoundthewhisky,butwecouldnot. WeexaminedHarrisastowhathehaddonewithit;buthedidnotseemtoknowwhatwemeantby"whisky,"orwhatweweretalkingaboutatall. Montmorencylookedasifheknewsomething,butsaidnothing. 

           Isleptwellthatnight,andshouldhavesleptbetterifithadnotbeenforHarris. IhaveavaguerecollectionofhavingbeenwokeupatleastadozentimesduringthenightbyHarriswanderingabouttheboatwiththelantern,lookingforhisclothes. Heseemedtobeworryingabouthisclothesallnight. 

           TwiceheroutedupGeorgeandmyselftoseeifwewerelyingonhistrousers. Georgegotquitewildthesecondtime.
