           ClievedenWoodsstillworetheirdaintydressofspring,androseup,fromthewater’sedge,inonelongharmonyofblendedshadesoffairygreen. Initsunbrokenlovelinessthisis,perhaps,thesweeteststretchofalltheriver,andlingeringlyweslowlydrewourlittleboatawayfromitsdeeppeace. 

           Wepulledupinthebackwater,justbelowCookham,andhadtea;and,whenwewerethroughthelock,itwasevening. Astiffishbreezehadsprungupinourfavour,forawonder; for,asaruleontheriver,thewindisalwaysdeadagainstyouwhateverwayyougo. Itisagainstyouinthemorning,whenyoustartforaday’strip,andyoupullalongdistance,thinkinghoweasyitwillbetocomebackwiththesail. Then,aftertea,thewindveersround,andyouhavetopullhardinitsteethallthewayhome.
