Therewasarustlingofdresses,andthestandingcongregationsatdown. Theboywhosehistorythisbookrelatesdidnotenjoytheprayer,heonlyenduredit—ifheevendidthatmuch. Hewasrestiveallthroughit; hekepttallyofthedetailsoftheprayer,unconsciously—forhewasnotlistening,butheknewthegroundofold,andtheclergyman’sregularrouteoverit —andwhenalittletrifleofnewmatterwasinterlarded,hiseardetecteditandhiswholenatureresentedit; heconsideredadditionsunfair,andscoundrelly. Inthemidstoftheprayeraflyhadlitonthebackofthepewinfrontofhimandtorturedhisspiritbycalmlyrubbingitshandstogether,embracingitsheadwithitsarms,andpolishingitsovigorouslythatitseemedtoalmostpartcompanywiththebody,andtheslenderthreadofaneckwasexposedtoview; scrapingitswingswithitshindlegsandsmoothingthemtoitsbodyasiftheyhadbeencoat-tails; goingthroughitswholetoiletastranquillyasifitknewitwasperfectlysafe.
