Theyfeltlikeheroesinaninstant. Herewasagorgeoustriumph;theyweremissed; theyweremourned;heartswerebreakingontheiraccount;tearswerebeingshed;accusingmemoriesofunkindnesstothesepoorlostladswererisingup,andunavailingregretsandremorsewerebeingindulged; andbestofall,thedepartedwerethetalkofthewholetown,andtheenvyofalltheboys,asfarasthisdazzlingnotorietywasconcerned. Thiswasfine. Itwasworthwhiletobeapirate,afterall.
Astwilightdrewon,theferryboatwentbacktoheraccustomedbusinessandtheskiffsdisappeared. Thepiratesreturnedtocamp. Theywerejubilantwithvanityovertheirnewgrandeurandtheillustrioustroubletheyweremaking. Theycaughtfish,cookedsupperandateit,andthenfelltoguessingatwhatthevillagewasthinkingandsayingaboutthem; andthepicturestheydrewofthepublicdistressontheiraccountweregratifyingtolookupon—fromtheirpointofview. Butwhentheshadowsofnightclosedthemin,theygraduallyceasedtotalk,andsatgazingintothefire,withtheirmindsevidentlywanderingelsewhere. Theexcitementwasgone,now,andTomandJoecouldnotkeepbackthoughtsofcertainpersonsathomewhowerenotenjoyingthisfinefrolicasmuchastheywere.
