Acatbird,theNorthernmocker,litinatreeoverTom’shead,andtrilledoutherimitationsofherneighborsinaraptureofenjoyment; thenashrilljaysweptdown,aflashofblueflame,andstoppedonatwigalmostwithintheboy’sreach,cockedhisheadtoonesideandeyedthestrangerswithaconsumingcuriosity; agraysquirrelandabigfellowofthe"fox"kindcameskurryingalong,sittingupatintervalstoinspectandchatterattheboys,forthewildthingshadprobablyneverseenahumanbeingbeforeandscarcelyknewwhethertobeafraidornot. AllNaturewaswideawakeandstirring,now; longlancesofsunlightpierceddownthroughthedensefoliagefarandnear,andafewbutterfliescameflutteringuponthescene.
Tomstirreduptheotherpiratesandtheyallclatteredawaywithashout,andinaminuteortwowerestrippedandchasingafterandtumblingovereachotherintheshallowlimpidwaterofthewhitesandbar. Theyfeltnolongingforthelittlevillagesleepinginthedistancebeyondthemajesticwasteofwater. Avagrantcurrentoraslightriseintheriverhadcarriedofftheirraft,butthisonlygratifiedthem,sinceitsgoingwassomethinglikeburningthebridgebetweenthemandcivilization.
Theycamebacktocampwonderfullyrefreshed,glad-hearted,andravenous; andtheysoonhadthecamp-fireblazingupagain.
