Thelatterhadneverbeenunderdrawn: itsentireanatomylaybaretoanenquiringeye,exceptwhereaframeofwoodladenwithoatcakesandclustersoflegsofbeef,mutton,andham,concealedit. Abovethechimneyweresundryvillainousoldguns,andacoupleofhorsepistols: and,bywayofornament,threegaudily-paintedcanistersdisposedalongitsledge. Thefloorwasofsmoothwhitestone; thechairs,high-backed,primitivestructures,paintedgreen: oneortwoheavyblackoneslurkingintheshade. Inanarchunderthedresser,reposedahuge,liver-colouredbitchpointer,surroundedbyaswarmofsquealingpuppies; andotherdogshauntedotherrecesses.
Theapartmentandfurniturewouldhavebeennothingextraordinaryasbelongingtoahomely,northernfarmer,withastubborncountenance,andstalwartlimbssetouttoadvantageinknee-breechesandgaiters.
