CyrusHardingthentooktwoslipsofzinc,oneofwhichwasplungedintoazoticacid,theotherintoasolutionofpotash.Acurrentwasimmediatelyproduced,whichwastransmittedfromtheslipofzincinthebottletothatinthetube,andthetwoslipshavingbeenconnectedbyametallicwiretheslipinthetubebecamethepositivepole,andthatinthebottlethenegativepoleoftheapparatus.Eachbottle,therefore,producedasmanycurrentsasunitedwouldbesufficienttoproduceallthephenomenaoftheelectrictelegraph.SuchwastheingeniousandverysimpleapparatusconstructedbyCyrusHarding,anapparatuswhichwouldallowthemtoestablishatelegraphiccommunicationbetweenGraniteHouseandthecorral.
Onthe6thofFebruarywascommencedtheplantingalongtheroadtothecorral,ofpostsfurnishedwithglassinsulators,andintendedtosupportthewire.Afewdaysafter,thewirewasextended,readytoproducetheelectriccurrentatarateoftwentythousandmilesasecond.
Twobatterieshadbeenmanufactured,oneforGraniteHouse,theotherforthecorral;forifitwasnecessarythecorralshouldbeabletocommunicatewithGraniteHouseitmightalsobeusefulthatGraniteHouseshouldbeabletocommunicatewiththecorral.
Astothereceiverandmanipulator,theywereverysimple.Atthetwostationsthewirewaswoundroundamagnet,thatistosay,roundapieceofsoftironsurroundedwithawire.
