HerbertandSpilettreturnedtofinishtheirwork;andsomehoursaftertheycamebacktotheshore,carryingtheutensilsandguns,astoreofvegetables,ofseeds,somegame,andtwocoupleofpigs.
Allwasembarked,andthe"Bonadventure"wasreadytoweighanchorandsailwiththemorningtide.
Theprisonerhadbeenplacedinthefore-cabin,whereheremainedquiet,silent,apparentlydeafanddumb.
Pencroftofferedhimsomethingtoeat,buthepushedawaythecookedmeatthatwaspresentedtohimandwhichdoubtlessdidnotsuithim.ButonthesailorshowinghimoneoftheduckswhichHerberthadkilled,hepouncedonitlikeawildbeast,anddevoureditgreedily.
