Onthe30thofApril,thetwosportsmenwereinthedepthoftheFarWest,whenthereporter,precedingHerbertafewpaces,arrivedinasortofclearing,intowhichthetreesmoresparselyscatteredhadpermittedafewraystopenetrate.GideonSpilettwasatfirstsurprisedattheodorwhichexhaledfromcertainplantswithstraightstalks,roundandbranchy,bearinggrape-likeclustersofflowersandverysmallberries.Thereporterbrokeoffoneortwoofthesestalksandreturnedtothelad,towhomhesaid,—
