           "Andwhatisthistreewhichresemblesalittlepalm?"askedHarding.

           "Itisa‘cycasrevoluta,’ofwhichIhaveapictureinourdictionaryofNaturalHistory!"saidHerbert.

           "ButIcan’tseeanyfruitonthisshrub!"observedhiscompanion.

           "No,captain,"repliedHerbert;"butitsstemcontainsaflourwithwhichnaturehasprovidedusallreadyground."

           "Itis,then,thebread-tree?"

           "Yes,thebread-tree."

           "Well,myboy,"repliedtheengineer,"thisisavaluablediscovery,sinceourwheatharvestisnotyetripe;Ihopethatyouarenotmistaken!"

           Herbertwasnotmistaken:hebrokethestemofacycas,whichwascomposedofaglanduloustissue,containingaquantityofflourypith,traversedwithwoodyfiber,separatedbyringsofthesamesubstance,arrangedconcentrically.Withthisfeculawasmingledamucilaginousjuiceofdisagreeableflavor,butwhichitwouldbeeasytogetridofbypressure.
