Theconstructionofthiscorraldidnottakelessthanthreeweeks,forbesidesthepalisade,CyrusHardingbuiltlargesheds,inwhichtheanimalscouldtakeshelter.Thesebuildingshadalsotobemadeverystrong,formusmonsarepowerfulanimals,andtheirfirstfurywastobefeared.Thestakes,sharpenedattheirupperendandhardenedbyfire,hadbeenfixedbymeansofcross-bars,andatregulardistancespropsassuredthesolidityofthewhole.
Thecorralfinished,araidhadtobemadeonthepasturesfrequentedbytheruminants.Thiswasdoneonthe7thofFebruary,onabeautifulsummer’sday,andeveryonetookpartinit.Theonagers,alreadywelltrained,wereriddenbySpilettandHerbert,andwereofgreatuse.
Themaneuverconsistedsimplyinsurroundingthemusmonsandgoats,andgraduallynarrowingthecirclearoundthem.CyrusHarding,Pencroft,Neb,andJup,postedthemselvesindifferentpartsofthewood,whilethetwocavaliersandTopgallopedinaradiusofhalfamileroundthecorral.
Themusmonswereverynumerousinthispartoftheisland.Thesefineanimalswereaslargeasdeer;theirhornswerestrongerthanthoseoftheram,andtheirgray-coloredfleecewasmixedwithlonghair.
Thishuntingdaywasveryfatiguing.
