Butwhatacontrastbetweenthisandtheeasterncoast,uponwhichchancehadfirstthrownthem.Nogranitecliff,norocks,notevenasandybeach.Theforestreachedtheshore,andthetalltreesbendingoverthewaterwerebeatenbythewaves.Itwasnotsuchashoreasisusuallyformedbynature,eitherbyextendingavastcarpetofsand,orbygroupingmassesofrock,butabeautifulborderconsistingofthemostsplendidtrees.Thebankwasraisedalittleabovethelevelofthesea,andonthisluxuriantsoil,supportedbyagranitebase,thefineforesttreesseemedtobeasfirmlyplantedasintheinterioroftheisland.
Thecolonistswerethenontheshoreofanunimportantlittleharbor,whichwouldscarcelyhavecontainedeventwoorthreefishing-boats.Itservedasanecktothenewcreek,ofwhichthecuriousthingwasthatitswaters,insteadofjoiningtheseabyagentleslope,fellfromaheightofmorethanfortyfeet,whichexplainedwhytherisingtidewasnotfeltupthestream.Infact,thetidesofthePacific,evenattheirmaximumelevation,couldneverreachtheleveloftheriver,and,doubtless,millionsofyearswouldpassbeforethewaterwouldhavewornawaythegraniteandhollowedapracticablemouth.
ItwassettledthatthenameofFallsRivershouldbegiventothisstream.Beyond,towardsthenorth,theforestborderwasprolongedforaspaceofnearlytwomiles;thenthetreesbecamescarcer,andbeyondthatagainthepicturesqueheightsdescribedanearlystraightline,whichrannorthandsouth.
