Thisinstrumentfinished,theengineerreturnedtothebeach,butasitwasnecessarytotaketheheightofthepolefromaboveaclearhorizon,thatis,aseahorizon,andasClawCapehidthesouthernhorizon,hewasobligedtolookforamoresuitablestation.Thebestwouldevidentlyhavebeentheshoreexposeddirectlytothesouth;buttheMercywouldhavetobecrossed,andthatwasadifficulty.Hardingresolved,inconsequence,tomakehisobservationfromProspectHeights,takingintoconsiderationitsheightabovethelevelofthesea—aheightwhichheintendedtocalculatenextdaybyasimpleprocessofelementarygeometry.
Thesettlers,therefore,wenttotheplateau,ascendingtheleftbankoftheMercy,andplacedthemselvesontheedgewhichlookednorthwestandsoutheast,thatis,abovethecuriously-shapedrockswhichborderedtheriver.
Thispartoftheplateaucommandedtheheightsoftheleftbank,whichslopedawaytotheextremityofClawCape,andtothesouthernsideoftheisland.Noobstacleinterceptedtheirgaze,whichsweptthehorizoninasemi-circlefromthecapetoReptileEnd.Tothesouththehorizon,lightedbythefirstraysofthemoon,wasveryclearlydefinedagainstthesky.
AtthismomenttheSouthernCrosspresenteditselftotheobserverinaninvertedposition,thestarAlphamarkingitsbase,whichisnearertothesouthernpole.
ThisconstellationisnotsituatedasneartotheantarcticpoleasthePolarStaristothearcticpole
