Challengerhadbeeninthehabitofwalkingoffbyhimselfeverymorningandreturningfromtimetotimewithlooksofportentoussolemnity,asonewhobearsthefullweightofagreatenterpriseuponhisshoulders.Oneday,palmbranchinhand,andhiscrowdofadoringdevoteesbehindhim,heledusdowntohishiddenwork-shopandtookusintothesecretofhisplans.
Theplacewasasmallclearinginthecenterofapalmgrove.InthiswasoneofthoseboilingmudgeyserswhichIhavealreadydescribed.Arounditsedgewerescatteredanumberofleathernthongscutfromiguanodonhide,andalargecollapsedmembranewhichprovedtobethedriedandscrapedstomachofoneofthegreatfishlizardsfromthelake.Thishugesackhadbeensewnupatoneendandonlyasmallorificeleftattheother.Intothisopeningseveralbamboocaneshadbeeninsertedandtheotherendsofthesecaneswereincontactwithconicalclayfunnelswhichcollectedthegasbubblingupthroughthemudofthegeyser.SoontheflaccidorganbegantoslowlyexpandandshowsuchatendencytoupwardmovementsthatChallengerfastenedthecordswhichheldittothetrunksofthesurroundingtrees.
