           ThenthekingcameforthagainstSirLancelot,butSirLancelotforborehimandwouldnotstrikeagain.

           ButonthemorrowSirGawainledforththearmyagain,andSirBorscommandedonSirLancelot’sside.Andtheytwostrucktogethersofiercelythatbothfelltothegroundsorelywounded;andallthedaytheyfoughttillnightfell,andmanywereslainonbothsides,yetintheendneithergainedthevictory.

           ButbynowthefameofthisfiercewarspreadthroughallChristendom,andwhenthePopeheardthereofhesentaBull,andchargedKingArthurtomakepeacewithLancelot,andreceivebackQueenGuinevere;andfortheoffenceimputedtoherabsolutionshouldbegivenbythePope.

           TheretowouldKingArthurstraightwayhaveobeyed,butSirGawaineverurgedhimtorefuse.

           WhenSirLancelotheardthereof,hewrotethustotheking:“Itwasneverinmythought,lord,towithholdthyqueenfromthee;butsinceshewascondemnedformysaketodeath,Ideemeditbutajustandknightlyparttorescuehertherefrom;whereforeIrecommendmetoyourgrace,andwithineightdayswillIcometotheeandbringthequeeninsafety.
