           Butatthattimeaheathenknight,SirPalomedes,wasinIreland,andmuchcherishedbythekingandqueen.HealsolovedmightilyLaBelleIsault,andneverweariedofmakinghergreatgifts,andseekingforherfavour,andwasreadyeventobechristenedforhersake.SirTristramthereforehatedhimoutofmeasure,andSirPalomedeswasfullofrageandenvyagainstTristram.

           AndsoitbefellthatKingAnguishproclaimedagreattournamenttobeheld,theprizewhereofshouldbealadycalledtheLadyoftheLaunds,ofnearkindredtotheking:andherthewinnerofthetournamentshouldwedinthreedaysafterwards,andpossessallherlands.WhenLaBelleIsaulttoldSirTristramofthistournament,hesaid,“Fairlady!Iamyetafeebleknight,andbutfortheehadbeenadeadmannow:whatwouldestthouIshoulddo?ThouknowestwellImaynotjoust.”

           “Ah,Tristram,”saidshe,“whywiltthounotfightinthistournament?SirPalomedeswillbethere,andwilldohismightiest;andthereforebethouthere,Ipraythee,orelsehewillbewinneroftheprize.”

           “Madam,”saidTristram,“Iwillgo,andforthysakewilldomybest;butletmegounknowntoallmen;anddothou,Ipraythee,keepmycounsel,andhelpmetoadisguise.”
