           TowhomKingMarksentanswer,ifhewouldhaveithemustsendandfightforit,andtheywouldfindachampiontofightagainstit.

           SoKingAnguishcalledforSirMarhaus,hiswife’sbrother,agoodknightoftheRoundTable,wholivedthenathiscourt,andsenthimwithaknightlyretinueinsixgreatshipstoCornwall.And,castinganchorbythecastleofTintagil,hesentupdailytoKingMarkforthetributeorthechampion.Butnoknighttherewouldventuretoassailhim,forhisfamewasveryhighinalltherealmforstrengthandhardihood.

           ThenmadeKingMarkaproclamationthroughoutCornwall,thatifanyknightwouldfightSirMarhausheshouldstandattheking’srighthandforevermore,andhavegreathonourandrichesalltherestofhisdays.AnonthisnewscametothelandofLyonesse,andwhenyoungTristramheardithewasangryandashamedtothinknoknightofCornwalldurstassailtheIrishchampion.“Alas,”saidhe,“thatIamnotaknight,thatImightmatchthisMarhaus!Iprayyougivemeleave,sir,todeparttoKingMark’scourtandbegofhisgracetomakemeknight.”

           “Beruledbythyowncourage,”saidhisfather.

           SoTristramrodeawayforthwithtoTintagiltoKingMark,andwentupboldlytohimandsaid,“Sir,givemetheorderofknighthoodandIwillfighttotheuttermostwithSirMarhausofIreland.”

           “Whatareye,andwhencecomeye?”saidtheking,seeinghewasbutayoungman,thoughstrongandwellmadebothinbodyandlimb.

           “MynameisTristram,”saidhe,“andIwasborninthecountryofLyonesse.
