           “Thelighthadflickeredonwards,nowstoppingandnowadvancing,untilIcouldseetwodarkfiguresupontheothersideofthemoat.Iletthemscrambledowntheslopingbank,splashthroughthemire,andclimbhalf-wayuptothegate,beforeIchallengedthem.

           “‘Friends,’cametheanswer.Iuncoveredmylanternandthrewafloodoflightuponthem.ThefirstwasanenormousSikh,withablackbeardwhichsweptnearlydowntohiscummerbund.OutsideofashowIhaveneverseensotallaman.Theotherwasalittle,fat,roundfellow,withagreatyellowturban,andabundleinhishand,doneupinashawl.
