ItnowappearedthatSnowballwasnot,afterall,hidingonPinchfieldFarm,andinfacthadneverbeenthereinhislife:hewasliving—inconsiderableluxury,soitwassaid—atFoxwood,andhadinrealitybeenapensionerofPilkingtonforyearspast.

Theanimalsfiledslowlypast,andeachgazedhisfill. AndBoxerputouthisnosetosniffatthebank-notes,andtheflimsywhitethingsstirredandrustledinhisbreath.
