           TwohourslaterAnneandCharlottatheFourthcamedownthelaneagain.GilberthadgonetoWestGraftononanerrandandDianahadtokeepanengagementathome.AnneandCharlottahadcomebacktoputthingsinorderandlockupthelittlestonehouse.Thegardenwasapooloflategoldensunshine,withbutterflieshoveringandbeesbooming;butthelittlehousehadalreadythatindefinableairofdesolationwhichalwaysfollowsafestivity.

           “Ohdearme,don’titlooklonesome?”sniffedCharlottatheFourth,whohadbeencryingallthewayhomefromthestation.“Aweddingain’tmuchcheerfullerthanafuneralafterall,whenit’sallover,MissShirley,ma’am.”

           Abusyeveningfollowed.Thedecorationshadtoberemoved,thedisheswashed,theuneatendelicaciespackedintoabasketforthedelectationofCharlottatheFourth’syoungbrothersathome.Annewouldnotrestuntileverythingwasinapple-pieorder;afterCharlottahadgonehomewithherplunderAnnewentoverthestillrooms,feelinglikeonewhotrodalonesomebanquethalldeserted,andclosedtheblinds.
