HehadcometotheedgeofMelanudrigill.Thetreesroselikeacloudabovehim,andaftertheopencoppiceofbirchandhazelheseemedtobelookingintodeepwaterwherethingswereseendarklyasthroughadullglass.Thereweregladeswhichranintoshadows,andfantasticrocks,andmoundsofdeadbrackenwhichlookedliketombs.Yettheplacefascinatedhim.It,too,wasunderthespellofSpring,andhewonderedhowSpringwalkedinitsrecesses.Heleaptthestreamandscrambledupthebankwithanoddfeelingofexpectation.Hewascalledtoadventureonthisdayofdays.
Theplacewasnotdark,butdimandverygreen.
