Thebircheswerestillonlyapalevapour,buttherewerebudsonthesaughsandthehazels.Remnantsofolddriftslaybehindthedykes,andontheLammerlawtherewasagreatfieldofsnow,butthebreezeblewsoftandthecryingofcurlewsandploverstoldofthespring.UponWindywaysandatthebackofReiverslawtheheatherwasburning,andspiralsofbluesmokerosetothepaleskies.
ThesightwasarevelationtoamantowhomspringhadcomehithertointhenarrowstreetsofEdinburgh.Hehadafancythatlifewasbeatingfuriouslyunderthebrownearth,andthathewasinthepresenceofamiracle.Hisyouth,longfrostedbywinter,seemedtoreturntohimandhiswholebeingtothaw.Almostshamefacedlyheacknowledgedanupliftofspirit.Thesmokefromthemoorburnwaslikethesmokeofsacrificeonancientaltars--innocentsacrificefromkindlyaltars.
