ButDavidwasnowinadifferentmoodfromthatofNovember.HerepressedwithhorroranunregenerateadmirationforthisMontrose,who,itseemed,wasstillyoung,andwithahandfulofcateranshadlaidanironhandonthenorth.Hemightbeafinesoldier,buthewasbeyonddoubtasonofBelial.ThetroublewithDavidwasthestateofhisownparish,comparedwithwhichthesorrowsofArgyllseemeddimandfaraway.
January,afterthesnowsmelted,hadbeenmildandopen,withtheburnsrunningfullandred,andthehillsonevastplashingbog.WithCandlemascameablackfrost,whichlastedthewholeofFebruaryandthefirsthalfofMarch.Theworstofthewinterstringencywasnowapproaching.
