MelanudrigillinthebrightOctoberdayshadlostitsmenaceforDavid.Hehadnooccasiontovisititbynight,butmorethanonceherodethroughitbydayonhispastoralvisitationstoFennanortheRoodvalley,andonceinaflamingsunsethereturnedthatwayfromKirkAller.Thebrackenwasgoldenindecay,andtheyellowingbirches,therussetthorns,andtheoccasionalscarletofrowansmadethesombreplacealmostcheerful.Inhiswalksonthehillthegreatforestbelowhimseemedtohavegrownthinandopen,nolongeravastenvelopingcloak,butakindlycoveringfortheribsofearth.Somepotencyhadgonefromitwiththesummer,asifthetidesofafiercelifehadsunkbackintothegroundagain.Hehadseendeerintheglades,andtheylookedinnocentthings....
