TheModeratorreadthewordswithafullvoiceandwithrelish.Heoutlinedbrieflythecivilconsequencesattachingtoexcommunication,anddweltterrifyinglyonthereligiousstateofonecutofffromcommunionwithChristandHisKirk.Thenheproceededtodeposetheministerinabsentiafromthechargeandtodeclareitvacanttillsuchtimeasasuccessorwasappointed.Theappointmentwouldbeinthefreegiftofthepeople,subjecttoconfirmationbythePresbytery,sinceNicholasHawkshaw,thechief,indeedthesole,heritor,wasanoutlawandafugitive.Heconcludedwithprayer,acopiousoutpouringinwhichthegodlyinWoodileewerelaudedfortheirzeal,condoledwithintheirsufferings,andrecommendedforaspecialmarkoftheLord’sfavour.Thenhedrewtheskirtsofhisgowndelicatelyaroundhim,andgaveplacetotheministerofBold.
