ThemillatRoodfootstoodgauntandtenantless,passingswiftlyintodecay.Hecouldseethatthemill-wheelhadgone,anditssupportsstooduplikebrokenteeth;theladewaschokedwithrushes;thelineofahillshowedthroughthebrokenrigging.Hehadknownofthis,butnonethelessthesightgavehimapang,forDavidwasajealousconserverofhispast....ButasthepathturneduptheglenbesidethebrawlingRood,hehadasuddenupliftingofspirit.Thiscouldnotchange,thissecretvalley,whoseeverycornerhehadquartered,whoseeverynookwasthehomeofadelightfulmemory.Hefeltagaintheoldardour,when,releasedfromEdinburgh,hehadfirstrevisitedhishaunts,tearfulwithexcitedjoy.
