Woodileehadsplitintotwofactions.TherewasthepartyoftheSession,whoheldDavidtobeamalignant,oratbestaLaodicean,onewhogaveadoubtfulsoundofdoctrine,arebel,adespiserofauthority,apreacherofacoldmorality.Tothissidebelongedmanyofundoubtedpiety,whohadbeenshockedbyhisdefianceandgavereadyeartowhisperedscandal.OfDavid’spartywererespectedprofessorslikeRichieSmailandRabPrentice,severalgodlywomen,adecenthindortwo,andatailwhichwasneithergodlynorrespected.AmonghissupportersweresomewhomhesuspectedofdealingswiththeWood,andingeneralhehadwithhimallthatwasleastesteemedintheparish.TohaveReiverslaw--whowasagaindrinkinghard--ashisprophet,andDaftGibbieashisfugleman,didnotenhancethecreditofhiscause.BetweentheJewsandtheSamaritanstherewerenodealings.
