Ofaverydifferenttypewashiscompanion,JuliusBurger.Hecameofacuriousblend,aGermanfatherandanItalianmother,withtherobustqualitiesoftheNorthminglingstrangelywiththesoftergracesoftheSouth.BlueTeutoniceyeslightenedhissun-brownedface,andabovethemroseasquare,massiveforehead,withafringeofcloseyellowcurlslyingroundit.Hisstrong,firmjawwasclean-shaven,andhiscompanionhadfrequentlyremarkedhowmuchitsuggestedthoseoldRomanbustswhichpeeredoutfromtheshadowsinthecornersofhischamber.UnderitsbluffGermanstrengththerelayalwaysasuggestionofItaliansubtlety,butthesmilewassohonest,andtheeyessofrank,thatoneunderstoodthatthiswasonlyanindicationofhisancestry,withnoactualbearinguponhischaracter.Inageandinreputation,hewasonthesamelevelashisEnglishcompanion,buthislifeandhisworkhadbothbeenfarmorearduous.Twelveyearsbefore,hehadcomeasapoorstudenttoRome,andhadlivedeversinceuponsomesmallendowmentforresearchwhichhadbeenawardedtohimbytheUniversityofBonn.
