The Horror of the Heights

           Withaterrificwrench,throwingmyweightalltooneside,Ilevelledmyplanesandbroughtherheadawayfromthewind.InaninstantIhadshotoutoftheeddiesandwasskimmingdownthesky.Then,shakenbutvictorious,Iturnedhernoseupandbeganoncemoremysteadygrindontheupwardspiral.Itookalargesweeptoavoidthedanger-spotofthewhirlpool,andsoonIwassafelyaboveit.Justafteroneo’clockIwastwenty-onethousandfeetabovethesea-level.TomygreatjoyIhadtoppedthegale,andwitheveryhundredfeetofascenttheairgrewstiller.Ontheotherhand,itwasverycold,andIwasconsciousofthatpeculiarnauseawhichgoeswithrarefactionoftheair.ForthefirsttimeIunscrewedthemouthofmyoxygenbagandtookanoccasionalwhiffofthegloriousgas.Icouldfeelitrunninglikeacordialthroughmyveins,andIwasexhilaratedalmosttothepointofdrunkenness.IshoutedandsangasIsoaredupwardsintothecold,stillouterworld.
