           "Buthowcouldthefour-fiftyparliamentarypassoverthesamelinewithoutobservingit?"

           "There’snoalternative,Mr.Hood.Itmustbeso.Possiblythelocaltrainmayhaveobservedsomethingwhichmaythrowsomelightuponthematter.WewillwiretoManchesterformoreinformation,andtoKenyonJunctionwithinstructionsthatthelinebeexaminedinstantlyasfarasBartonMoss."TheanswerfromManchestercamewithinafewminutes.

           "Nonewsofmissingspecial.DriverandguardofslowtrainpositivenoaccidentbetweenKenyonJunctionandBartonMoss.Linequiteclear,andnosignofanythingunusual.—Manchester."

           ButMr.Bland’sprophecywasnotdestinedtobefulfilled.Halfanhourpassed,andthentherearrivedthefollowingmessagefromthestation-masterofKenyonJunction—

           "Therearenotracesofthemissingspecial.Itisquitecertainthatshepassedhere,andthatshedidnotarriveatBartonMoss.
